It holds about 37-38 buildings, mostly modest mid-19th-century cottages.","why_significant":"The district reflects Hyannis's growing 19th-century maritime industries, since most houses were built by sea captains and mariners in the coastwise trade. It was home to many noted captains. It is also a cohesive group of Greek Revival cottages unified by scale, materials and style.","narrative":"Pleasant Street and School Street in Hyannis form a compact neighborhood of about 37 to 38 buildings just north of Lewis Bay and the inner harbor. Most were built in the mid-19th century as homes for sea captains and mariners who worked the coastwise trade between Boston, New York and the southern states. The houses are mainly one-and-a-half-story Greek Revival cottages with clapboard or shingle siding, and the district is described as among the most cohesive in town in scale, materials, style and original ownership. The oldest house, the Captain Allen Hallett House, dates to before 1770 and possibly 1700. Later examples include a Mansard house of about 1878 and a bungalow of about 1905. Captains Benjamin Hallett, Allen Crowell and C. Howard Allyn lived here, and the Barnstable Patriot newspaper later operated on Pleasant Street. Some buildings have been altered or have deteriorated because of nearby commercial development, though many remain in good condition.","period_of_significance":"19th century through the mid 20th century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival (predominant), with some Federal, Georgian, Italianate, Queen Anne, Mansard and bungalow examples","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"General condition described as good to excellent, though many buildings have deteriorated or been altered in recent years because of nearby commercial development.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.934991-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/3/7891/63789103/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000257.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000257/c84ffd441e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000257/c84ffd441e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BarnstableMA_PleasantSchoolStreetHD3.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BarnstableMA_PleasantSchoolStreetHD3.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789103","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleasant%E2%80%93School_Street_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7203763"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/pleasant-school-street-historic-district-87000257/"}
