Its 19th-century character is unusual so close to Osterville center, which has been heavily developed in recent years. It was judged to meet criterion C.","narrative":"Set on a residential street just west of Osterville's commercial center, this c1780 cottage at 38 Bay Street is a traditional Federal-style house. It has five bays, a center entry and chimney, a gable roof and 1 1/2 stories, with wood shingle walls. The paneled entry is topped by a multi-pane transom, and the 6/6 sash windows have simple, slightly projecting frames. The entry and facade windows sit directly beneath the eaves. An ell was added in 1970, and the property includes a barn about 100 years old. The house is associated with Nymphus Hinckley, a Revolutionary War veteran and descendant of Governor Hinckley, who was excommunicated from the Centerville Congregational Church after a dispute over money and property. Around 1895 it was home to Osmond F. Ames, a Civil War veteran. The property was listed for its architecture. The cottage and barn survive as a rare 19th-century setting in a village center that has been intensely developed.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is listed as excellent.
