Built for Matthias Smith.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the property is significant as an evolutionary example of a mid-18th century West Barnstable farmstead, made up of an expanded main house and numerous outbuildings. It is said to retain integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association.","narrative":"Built around 1760 for Matthias Smith, this story-and-a-half Full Cape stands on the southwest side of Cedar Street in West Barnstable. It began as a three-quarter Cape and was enlarged to a full Cape by adding a bay on the right; the work is recorded as done in 1966. Two one-story ells sit to the left. Details include a centered front door with a transom of two bull's-eye lights, small-pane 12/12 windows, unpainted wood shingle walls and chimneys at both gable ends. The property remains a working farm with a barn, tool house, three chicken houses and a garage. Deed records trace ownership from Matthias Smith, born 1738, to his son Isaac in 1819, then to Henry Lawrence in 1836 and through several later owners. Cedar Street was once part of an Indian trail used by early settlers between Plymouth and Mattakeese. The house is valued as an example of a mid-18th century farmstead that grew over time.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; original owner Matthias Smith","architectural_style":"Full Cape, story and a half","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition listed as excellent; in use as a private residence and working farm.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.354209-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/57/7890/63789057/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000240.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000240/b0e80aac45-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000240/b0e80aac45-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:375_Cedar_St,_West_Barnstable_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:375_Cedar_St,_West_Barnstable_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789057","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthias_Smith_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6791607"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/smith-matthias-house-87000240/"}
