It began as a three-bay half Cape and was expanded to a full Cape in 1843.","why_significant":"The house is significant for its long association, until 1926, with a well-known local family, the Crocker family. It also reflects West Barnstable's agricultural history. It is a fine, well-preserved example of a Federal period Cape cottage.","narrative":"Standing at 325 Willow Street in West Barnstable, this shingled Federal period Cape dates to about 1790. It began as a three-bay half Cape, and the southwest end was added in 1843, giving it a full five-bay front. The symmetrical facade centers on an entry with narrow sidelights instead of a transom, and windows hold 6/6 sash. The house sits on a low stone foundation under a gable roof with a large central chimney, and a one-story rear ell extends it. Beams and stones from a nearby deteriorating stone fort are reported to have been used in construction. The land was part of Deacon William Crocker's early grant, and Crocker family members, including Benomi, Barnabas, Erwin, Stephen II and Edward, owned the property until 1926. Its long family ties, its place in West Barnstable's farming history and its well-preserved architecture support its listing. It remains a dwelling in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as excellent; present use is a dwelling. The house has not been moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:12:59.939857-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/7890/63789085/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/87000216.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000216/28740d8d55-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000216/28740d8d55-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Stina716","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Benomi_and_Barnabas_Crocker_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Stina716</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Benomi_and_Barnabas_Crocker_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789085","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benomi_and_Barnabas_Crocker_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4890120"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/crocker-benomi-and-barnabas-house-87000216/"}
