The houses date from about 1845 to 1870.","why_significant":"The district is argued to be architecturally significant as an intact grouping of distinctive mid-to-late nineteenth century houses showing Greek Revival, Gothic Revival/Picturesque and Second Empire styles. It was New Hamburg's prime residential street and reflects the prosperity brought by the railroad and river trade. The houses are described as the best-preserved group from the hamlet's peak period of prosperity.","narrative":"Four houses on the west side of Stone Street and Division Street in New Hamburg form a compact district of about one acre. Built between roughly 1845 and 1870, they show how local taste moved from Greek Revival to Victorian Gothic and Second Empire design. The brick house at 5 Stone Street, from about 1858, follows the two-story side-hall form common in the hamlet. Number 7, built in 1870, has a slate mansard roof and bracketed cornice, and is described as the most distinctive Second Empire residence in the area. Number 9 is a modest L-shaped house with decorated vergeboards, and 18 Division Street is a formal center-hall frame house in Victorian Gothic style. All four lots came from one parcel bought by Samuel T. and Maria Ellis in 1841. Railroad widening in the late 1920s removed the houses across the street, leaving these as the best-preserved group from New Hamburg's most prosperous period, tied to the river trade and railroad.","period_of_significance":"1845-1870","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival, Gothic Revival (Victorian Gothic/Picturesque) and Second Empire; Hudson River Bracketed","criteria":[],"status_note":"The houses are in residential use; 7 Stone Street has been divided into three apartments.
