It is also one of only two surviving resources tied to the hamlet's lime quarry, kiln and dock complex, built for Adolph D. Brower to oversee those operations.","narrative":"Overlooking the Hudson River at the foot of Division Street in New Hamburg, this brick house was built around 1845 for Adolph D. Brower of New York City, who bought the riverfront tract in 1837. He built it to oversee a lime quarry and kiln operation. Lime was burned as flux for regional pig iron furnaces, used in bricklayers' mortar, and shipped to New Jersey to improve farm soil. The house looks over High Dock, one of three main wharves in the hamlet. Albert Tower of the Poughkeepsie Iron Works bought the property in 1870 and destroyed the kilns. The house is a three-bay, two-and-one-half story Greek Revival residence with a slate gable roof, cornice returns, a side-hall plan and a full-length two-tier porch with square columns and a delicate balustrade. It survives as one of the oldest buildings in New Hamburg with original integrity, and with the nearby Abraham Brower house it is the last reminder of the lime industry there.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect and builder unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good, with use as a residence; side porches were enclosed and a garage added about 1945.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.909551-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/87000114.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000114/a1121d2f47-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/87000114/a1121d2f47-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adolph_Brower_House,_New_Hamburg,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Adolph_Brower_House,_New_Hamburg,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312648","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolph_Brower_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4684321"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/brower-adolph-house-87000114/"}
