It reflects Malden's rapid population and industrial growth around 1900 and the period's educational theories of light and ventilation. It is also the only Tudor Revival school in Malden and the city's only work by Brainerd and Leeds.","narrative":"Charles A. Daniels School is a monumental red brick schoolhouse on Daniels Street in Malden, Massachusetts, about five miles north of Boston. Built around 1906-1907 to designs by the Boston firm Brainerd and Leeds, it has an H-shaped plan, a gabled three-story main block, and two-story flanking wings. Limestone and granite trim, buff brick quoins, stepped gables and an elaborate granite entry give it a distinctive Tudor Revival character. The school was built for Ward 7, a fast-growing area of immigrant workers' housing where the older Lincoln School was badly overcrowded. Its large windows, two-sided classroom exposure, wide corridors and ventilation system followed the school design ideas of the day. It is the only Tudor-inspired school among Malden's institutional buildings. It was named for Charles A. Daniels, a longtime local educator and superintendent. A 1957 addition is considered noncontributing. The school closed in 1981 and has been vacant since, with residential conversion planned.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Brainerd & Leeds","architectural_style":"Tudor Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Closed as a school in 1981 and vacant since; plans call for converting the 1906 building to residential use and demolishing the 1957 addition for townhouses.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.418734-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/7958/63795885/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86003562.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86003562/ab2f3eec8b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86003562/ab2f3eec8b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MaldenMA_CharlesADanielsSchool.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MaldenMA_CharlesADanielsSchool.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795885","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_A._Daniels_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5074826"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/daniels-charles-a-school-86003562/"}
