It illustrates how the steam engine and roller milling changed the grist milling economy in the 1880s. It is also the only structure remaining from the city's 19th century flour milling industry.","narrative":"Rising four stories above a raised basement on North Main Street in Mansfield, this brick mill was built in 1881 by Gilbert, Waugh & Co. to house a modern roller milling operation. Roller mills ground wheat more finely than buhrstones, and the new steam-powered plant tripled capacity from 100 to 300 barrels of flour per day. The building keeps its pressed metal cornice, classical parapet, slate roof, segmentally arched windows and rounded limestone entrance steps, along with painted signage from early occupants. Inside are open floors, post and beam construction and exposed brick walls. Flour production continued until about 1920, after which the building served as a wholesale fruit and produce warehouse, with cold storage added in the basement in the 1920s. It is the only building left from Mansfield's 19th century flour milling industry, which once included three mills, and it remains a landmark of the North Main Street industrial area.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"unknown (built by Gilbert, Waugh & Co.)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Occupied and used as a produce warehouse; condition listed as fair and unaltered, with the interior well preserved though mill machinery has been removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:15.229184-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/86003500.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86003500/b05c3006e3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86003500/b05c3006e3-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:City_Mills_Building_in_Mansfield.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:City_Mills_Building_in_Mansfield.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991130","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138663771"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/richland-county/city-mills-building-86003500/"}
