It is also significant under Criterion C as an example of early 20th century residential architecture. It is one of several similar Queen Anne houses that together make up the East Broad streetscape.","narrative":"This 2½-story brick house at 1231 East Broad Street in Columbus was built about 1900 for Frank J. Kaufman, a sales manager at the H.C. Godman Company, a local shoe manufacturer. The Kaufman family lived there through the 1940s. At the time of construction, East Broad Street was a tree-lined boulevard and one of the most fashionable residential streets in the city. The house reflects the Queen Anne style through its square plan, irregular massing and roofline, projecting front bays and hip-roofed dormers. Two round two-story bays with conical roofs and ball finials flank a square tower, and a one-story porch with brick piers and stone trim spans the front. A two-story carriage house with shingled gables stands behind it. The house was listed for its role in the turn-of-the-century development of East Broad Street and the near east side, and as one of several similar houses that give the street its architectural variety.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne (described as eclectic)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as offices; exterior condition rated fair, interior unknown.
