A carriage house stands at the rear and west side of the lot.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion A as an example of turn-of-the-century residential development along East Broad Street, then a fashionable tree-lined boulevard. Under Criterion C it displays distinct Georgian Revival characteristics, and it is one of only two Georgian Revival examples on the street. It is also tied to two prominent Columbus business families, the Johnsons and the Campbells.","narrative":"Built in 1906 at 1203 East Broad Street in Columbus, this 2½-story brick house was designed by the firm Richards, McCarty & Bulford for Edward Johnson. It has Georgian Revival massing with a projecting central gable and portico, rusticated quoins, Tuscan Doric columns, paired end chimneys, dentils, a fan-light dormer window and multi-light windows. A two-story carriage house survives at the rear. When it was built, East Broad Street was a tree-lined boulevard and one of the city's most fashionable residential addresses. The house is one of only two Georgian Revival examples along the street and is a well-preserved reminder of that era. Johnson, president of the Lorain Coal & Dock Company, lived there until 1912. Joseph C. Campbell, president of the National Bank of Commerce and a state agent for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance, owned it from 1912 to 1943. Later alterations include a rear block addition and an enclosed east porch. The property now serves as a mental health facility.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Richards, McCarty & Bulford (architects); builder unknown","architectural_style":"Georgian Revival, with classical influences","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a mental health center (intermediate care facility) with a rear block addition and a cinderblock-filled east porch; exterior condition very good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.359916-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/86003414.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86003414/4a8b04d5f5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86003414/4a8b04d5f5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johnson-Campbell_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Johnson-Campbell_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"78002063","name":"Columbus Near East Side District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/columbus-near-east-side-district-78002063/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985204","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson-Campbell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16892934"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/franklin-county/johnson-campbell-house-86003414/"}
