The congregation grew out of the First Presbyterian Church of Franklinton and was organized in 1887 under Dr. Francis Marsten, who saw the developing residential East Broad Street as a chance to extend the church's reach beyond downtown. Construction began in 1887, and the sanctuary and chapel were finished in 1894. Architect Frank Packard directed alterations in 1907 and 1908, extending the east wall and doubling the auditorium, and Palmer Hall was added in 1922. The work was sympathetic to the original design. The church is valued for reflecting the eastward growth of Columbus and as one of the city's best examples of its style. Tiffany Studios windows are among its finest features.","period_of_significance":"1887-1894","architect_builder":"Elah Terrell; Frank Packard","architectural_style":"Richardsonian Romanesque","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a church; condition listed as excellent on the exterior and very good on the interior.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.192409-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/86003397.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86003397/da25a3a491-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86003397/da25a3a491-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:East_Broad_Street_Presbyterian_Church,_blue_sky.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:East_Broad_Street_Presbyterian_Church,_blue_sky.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71985206","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Broad_Street_Presbyterian_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5327950"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/franklin-county/east-broad-street-presbyterian-church-86003397/"}
