Its first-floor parlors and dining room, with elaborate plasterwork and an unusual pendant arcade, are called among the finest mid-Victorian interiors in Virginia. It also has Civil War associations, having been occupied and then confiscated as a military hospital.","narrative":"Built in 1854 for Alexandria commission merchant William Bayne, this three-story town house at 811 Prince Street shows the Italianate style in a city better known for Federal-era buildings. Its brick walls carry a coursed sandstone facade, now painted, with a side-hall plan, tall windows, stone balconies and a bracketed cornice. Inside, the first-floor double parlors and dining room have deep plaster cornices, ceiling medallions, heavy woodwork and a pendant arcade with cast-iron brackets. The house passed to merchant William H. Fowle in 1855. During the Civil War Federal forces occupied it, and in 1864 it was confiscated for use as a military hospital. Fowle sued for its return but died in 1869, and his estate sold it in 1871. It has been a private residence since then, and several later owners were physicians who kept offices in the east extension. The architect remains unidentified. It was recognized for its architecture and as an expression of merchant-class status.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"In use as a private residence since its construction; condition listed as excellent, with minor alterations that have not compromised its integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.226883-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/24/6794/41679424/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/86003136.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86003136/c4276d868c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86003136/c4276d868c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ser Amantio de Nicalao","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bayne-Fowle_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio de Nicalao</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bayne-Fowle_House.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000928","name":"Alexandria Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/alexandria-historic-district-66000928/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679424","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayne%E2%80%93Fowle_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4874651"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/alexandria/bayne-fowle-house-86003136/"}
