Sagamore is one of only three Great Camps in the thematic group to retain an intact agricultural and service complex, giving an unusually complete picture of late nineteenth century camp life.","narrative":"Twelve service buildings along a 650-foot dirt road at Raquette Lake make up the caretaking complex of Sagamore Lodge, an Adirondack Great Camp. William West Durant planned and built them between 1897 and 1901 alongside the main lodge. They include a blacksmith shop, guides' house, carpenter's shop, barn, carriage shed, ice house, root cellar, woodshed and a large staff house. Most are board-and-batten structures with standing-seam metal roofs. Adding them enlarged the nominated area from 7.71 to 17.91 acres and brought the total to 22 contributing buildings. The compound housed staff and produced and stored food, hardware and repairs needed for a remote estate. Sagamore is one of only three Great Camps in its group that kept an intact agricultural complex, which makes the picture of camp life unusually complete. The buildings are deteriorated, with a collapsed porch on the guides' house and a lost root cellar roof, but they have few modern intrusions. The surrounding preserve lies within the Adirondack Forest Preserve.","period_of_significance":"1897-1901","architect_builder":"William West Durant","architectural_style":"Late nineteenth century Adirondack vernacular service buildings (the main lodge is modeled on the Alpine chalet with rustic work)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Buildings are considerably deteriorated but survive with few modern alterations; the complex is under private ownership with legal restrictions and covenants, and the form lists present use as educational.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.327992-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/86002940.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002940/1163c12f3e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002940/1163c12f3e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sagamore_Camp,_Long_Lake,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sagamore_Camp,_Long_Lake,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313098","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Camp_Sagamore","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7398974"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/hamilton-county/sagamore-lodge-boundary-increase-86002940/"}
