The nomination describes its floor plan as the earliest documented example of this combination in Lancaster County. Its original interior features, including ceiling infill, cast plaster ornament and heating arrangements, are described as seldom surviving among county buildings.","narrative":"Built in 1769 on Millcross Road in Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, this two-story limestone house blends Pennsylvania-German and Anglo-American Georgian planning. Its original block has a half-passage plan, dressed and coursed rough ashlar on the south front and rubble on the other walls, and six-over-six windows set beneath stone arches. Inside, the first floor keeps a Stube with a cast plaster ceiling bearing the inscription CST 1769 and a Catherines Wheel motif, along with clay, straw and pale ceiling infill, original paint evidence, a plaster stove collar and remains of a cast iron heating system. Christian Stauffer, a German immigrant farmer-merchant, bought 340 acres along Conestoga Creek in 1763. The floor plan is regarded as the earliest documented example of Germanic and Georgian living spaces combined in Lancaster County. An 1890s frame wing on the east gable end and a group of outbuildings, including a late eighteenth century bank barn, complete the property.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Pennsylvania-Germanic and Anglo-American Georgian design","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored in recent years after years of neglect, including repointing, a new roof and replaced interior plaster and flooring; the 1890s addition's interior was nearly gutted and rebuilt.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:33.405768-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/86002889.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002889/80ec852e7c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002889/80ec852e7c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CHRISTIAN_STAUFFER_HOUSE,_LANCASTER,_COUNTY,_PA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995343","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Stauffer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5110162"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/stauffer-christian-house-86002889/"}
