It also reflects Asheville's 1920s boom. It is notable for its inventive details and salvaged materials from other Ellington projects.","narrative":"Tucked into a wooded hillside in Asheville's Chunn's Cove, this house was designed and built in 1926 by architect Douglas Ellington for his own use. It is a rambling composition of fieldstone, brick, log and half-timbering under a complex wood-shingle roof, built around an older log cabin and arranged on several levels. Ellington drew no plans, working as construction progressed with local labor and one Italian stonemason. He reused materials from his other projects, including tile from the S&W Cafeteria and stone from City Hall. Interior details include chestnut walls, a massive stone fireplace, hand-wrought ironwork and cypress doors. Ellington, born in Clayton in 1886 and trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, designed some of Asheville's best-known 1920s buildings. The house was listed as the home of a prominent North Carolina architect during his most productive years and as his most personal design. It was also rated by House Beautiful among the fifty most interesting American residences.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Douglas Ellington","architectural_style":"Eludes stylistic description; a fanciful, picturesque composition evoking both cottage and castle imagery","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Described as unaltered and on its original site; the property had seen years of minimal maintenance and restoration of the house and grounds was under way when nominated.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.535872-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/65/7191/47719165/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/86002881.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002881/a82ec21b28-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002881/a82ec21b28-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Karen Hoffman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Douglas_Ellington_House,_Asheville,_NC_03.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Karen Hoffman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Douglas_Ellington_House,_Asheville,_NC_03.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719165","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Ellington_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18149840"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/buncombe-county/ellington-douglas-house-86002881/"}
