Its three-story marble lobby is among the finest remaining interiors in the city. It was the first new bank building in Mansfield after 1900 and influenced later bank designs there.","narrative":"Occupying a prominent corner in downtown Mansfield, this granite bank building was constructed from 1913 to 1915 for the Mansfield Savings Bank, the first savings bank in the city and in North Central Ohio. York and Sawyer's plans, drawn for a Rochester, New York, trust building, were adapted for the project. The exterior shows Classical Revival design through corner piers, a screen of engaged Ionic columns, a dentilled and modillioned cornice, and a paneled parapet. Inside, a three-story lobby of Italian and French marble features Corinthian pilasters, an ornate plaster ceiling, and a stained and beveled glass skylight. Most of this survives above a later drop ceiling. Local newspapers said the building marked a new era in banking. It set the pattern for later Mansfield banks that also used classical styling, including those of 1925 and 1926. After a 1953 merger, the building housed a trust department until the bank sold it.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"York and Sawyer","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as unoccupied and vacant; the interior is largely intact apart from a drop ceiling, paneled partitions, carpeting and removed teller booths. A restoration was anticipated.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.249861-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/86002872.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002872/9a25015db1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002872/9a25015db1-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"User:OHWiki","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mansfield_Savings_Bank.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">User:OHWiki</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mansfield_Savings_Bank.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100004214","name":"Downtown Mansfield Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/downtown-mansfield-historic-district-100004214/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991094","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138663695"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/richland-county/mansfield-savings-bank-86002872/"}
