It shows hallmarks of the style such as an asymmetrical picturesque form, pointed arches, masonry construction, window tracery, towers and castellated rooflines. It also reflects the cosmopolitan character of Southampton's early twentieth century summer resort development.","narrative":"Balcastle is a large brick house on the northwest corner of Herrick and Little Plains Roads in Southampton Village, built in 1909-1910. It is one story and five bays wide, set on a high brick foundation, with a small octagonal tower on the west side and a dominant two-story square tower on the east. Castellated parapets, pointed brick arches with stone keystones, and multi-paned windows with tracery give it a medieval profile. A small hexagonal garden pavilion with pointed arched windows also survives on the landscaped lot. Local builder Edward Elliston constructed the house for a reportedly prosperous Russian immigrant, about whom little is known. It was listed as Southampton's only example of castellated Gothic architecture. Built as the village reached the height of its turn-of-the-century summer resort development, it differs from Elliston's other work and reflects the original owner's personal taste and social aspirations. Surrounded by smaller wood frame houses, it remains a local landmark.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Builder: Edward Elliston; architect unknown","architectural_style":"Castellated Gothic","criteria":[],"status_note":"Inventory form lists condition as good, use as residential (same as original), and no known threats; interior accessible by appointment only.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.232302-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/86002722.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002722/3bd8b549b2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002722/3bd8b549b2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Balcastle-sh.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Balcastle-sh.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"86002726","name":"Southampton Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/southampton-village-historic-district-86002726/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314783","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balcastle","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4850224"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/balcastle-86002722/"}
