It includes the church, an attached parish hall and a manse on a landscaped site.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an outstanding example of Neo-Gothic design by a nationally prominent architectural firm. It contains furnishings and glass designed by the architects, plus a large Tiffany Studios memorial window. The grounds were landscaped by Olmsted Brothers. It was built as a memorial to financier Russell Sage by his wife Margaret.","narrative":"Built between 1908 and 1910 on the highest ground in Far Rockaway, Queens, this brick church with concrete trim was designed by Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson in the Neo-Gothic style. It follows the plan of an ideal English parish church, with a high nave, low side aisles, transepts, a tall crossing tower, and an attached parish hall and manse. Margaret Sage paid for it as a memorial to her husband, the financier Russell Sage. Inside, the architects designed the chancel woodwork, furniture and organ cases, and Mary Tillinghast made the nave and aisle windows. A large landscape window by Tiffany Studios, placed at the rear, commemorates Sage. Olmsted Brothers landscaped the grounds, and many mature trees survive. The building is valued as a major commission for a leading firm of the early twentieth century, and it reflects the architects' belief that Gothic design could use modern materials such as concrete trim and reinforced concrete floors.","period_of_significance":"1908-10","architect_builder":"Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson","architectural_style":"Neo-Gothic (derived from late English Perpendicular Gothic)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition, and in religious use by a private owner; two non-contributing garages are on the lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.303204-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/86002678.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002678/81cce8fb99-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002678/81cce8fb99-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sage_Presbyterian_Ch_Far_Rock_jeh.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sage_Presbyterian_Ch_Far_Rock_jeh.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321143","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Far_Rockaway","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453685"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/queens/sage-russell-sage-memorial-church-86002678/"}
