The City of Victoria owns it.","why_significant":"It is one of two public squares set aside in the 1839 town plan and the only one that still serves its original function. Its present layout combines the 1885 bandstand, early twentieth-century pecan plantings by naturalist J. D. Mitchell, and a 1940 PWA project. Reviewers accepted it for community planning and landscape architecture.","narrative":"DeLeon Plaza, in the 100 block of West Constitution Street in Victoria, Texas, is a public square that began as one of two set aside in Ed Linn's 1839 town plan. It is the only one that still serves its original public function. At its center stands an octagonal, raised wood-frame bandstand from about 1885, with a composition shingle roof, a wooden spire at the peak, turned posts, and jig-sawn balustrade and brackets. The bandstand was moved to the middle of the park in 1923. Naturalist J. D. Mitchell reshaped the square in the early twentieth century by replacing brittle hackberry trees with sturdier native pecans, many of which still ring the block. This changed the square from a mostly utilitarian open space into a shaded recreational park, uncommon for small Texas towns then. A 1940 Public Works Administration project added grading, sidewalks, benches and two monuments. The site is listed for community planning and landscape architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian bandstand (octagonal, wood frame with jig-sawn detailing)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present use is a park.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.48611-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/9705/40970578/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002584.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002584/f54d59217d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002584/f54d59217d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Billy Hathorn at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DeLeon_Plaza_and_Bandstand.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Billy Hathorn at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DeLeon_Plaza_and_Bandstand.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970578","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeLeon_Plaza_and_Bandstand","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5243985"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/deleon-plaza-and-bandstand-86002584/"}
