Santa Rosa in Victoria, Texas, this two-story wood-frame house was commissioned by Max Bettin, a prominent local grocer of the early twentieth century and a leader in the Jewish community. Architect Jules Leffland is believed to have designed it. The eclectic dwelling has weatherboard siding, a hipped roof with box eaves, and hipped dormers with Doric columns between the windows. An L-shaped two-story porch wraps the south and east sides, with shingled box columns, scroll brackets and turned balusters. Other features include a projecting entry bay with a low pediment, an oriel bay window on the west side, and a two-story board-and-batten barn at the northeast corner of the lot. A smaller one-story house that once stood on the site was moved to 604 E. Santa Rosa to make room for it. The property remains in good condition, is still a residence, and has stayed with the same family. It was listed for its architecture and its link to Bettin's local business career.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Jules Leffland","architectural_style":"Eclectic dwelling","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Present condition is described as good, and the house is still used as a residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.917051-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/29/9705/40970529/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002564.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002564/984b594915-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002564/984b594915-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"ProfReader","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Max_Bettin_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">ProfReader</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Max_Bettin_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970529","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Bettin_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6794579"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/bettin-max-house-86002564/"}
