Santa Rosa in Victoria, Texas, completed in 1899 (dated about 1900) and designed by architect Jules Leffland for Mrs. J. V. Murphy.","why_significant":"The nomination cites architectural significance. Jules Leffland designed the large house for Mrs. J. V. Murphy, a businesswoman with vast ranch holdings in the area. Apart from the upper part of its tower, lost to a storm in the early 1900s and never rebuilt, the house remains relatively unchanged since 1899.","narrative":"Standing at 204 E. Santa Rosa in Victoria, Texas, this large Victorian dwelling was designed by architect Jules Leffland for Mrs. J. V. Murphy, a businesswoman who held extensive ranch lands in the area. Completed in 1899, the wood-frame house rises two and a half stories under a hipped roof with gables and has an asymmetrical plan. Its surfaces combine weatherboard with several patterns of wood shingle, notably on an engaged stair turret at the southwest corner. A five-bay porch wraps the south and east sides, with stylized Ionic columns, clustered Doric supports, turned balustrades and a spindle frieze. The main entrance has beveled, leaded glass and a transom. A storm destroyed the top of the tower in the early 1900s and it was never rebuilt, but the house is otherwise little changed. It sits on the edge of the central business district among commercial buildings, remains in residential use and is in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Jules Leffland","architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present condition is stated as good, and the present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.189745-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/86/9704/40970486/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002554.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002554/f01dd31050-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002554/f01dd31050-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Murphy_House_in_Victoria_Texas.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Murphy_House_in_Victoria_Texas.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970486","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._J._V._Murphy_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6929784"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/murphy-mrs-j-v-house-86002554/"}
