Vandenberge as a civic leader who served as county attorney and district attorney, became a principal in a law firm, and sat on the board of Victoria Bank & Trust.","narrative":"Built in 1908 at 301 N. Vine in Victoria, Texas, this two-and-a-half-story house was designed by architect Jules Leffland for attorney J. V. Vandenberge. It is a wood frame Neoclassical Revival residence with weatherboard siding, an asymmetrical plan and a truncated hip roof with gable dormers. Its most distinctive features are a two-story pedimented portico on the east side and a five-bay, two-story curved portico on the south, both with fluted Ionic columns and turned balustrades. Other details include a denticulated frieze, a semicircular window in the east pediment, angled two-story window bays and a raised basement with a cast stone foundation. Vandenberge, a University of Texas Law School graduate, served as county attorney and district attorney, joined the law firm of Proctor, Vandenberge, Crain and Mitchell, and sat on the board of Victoria Bank & Trust. He left the house after remarrying in 1921. It remains a residence in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Jules Leffland","architectural_style":"Neoclassical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and still in residential use, as stated in the survey inventory.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.119038-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/25/9705/40970525/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002550.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002550/6848295f42-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002550/6848295f42-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"ProfReader","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:J.V._Vandeberge_House_-_east_facade.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">ProfReader</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:J.V._Vandeberge_House_-_east_facade.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970525","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._V._Vandenberge_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6107301"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/vandenberge-j-v-house-86002550/"}
