Vine in the northwest quadrant of Victoria's original townsite, Texas, built around 1900.","why_significant":"The house is significant as an example of Victorian architecture, probably designed and decorated from ornament available through local lumber companies or catalogues. It also has ties to local figures: J.F. Hart, E.J. Hogan and J.H. Clegg, a company officer and city alderman.","narrative":"Built around 1900 at 507 N. Vine in Victoria, Texas, this two-story wood-frame house shows the decorative character of Victorian architecture. It has an asymmetrical plan, weatherboard siding, and a hip roof with gables. A one-story wraparound porch rises to two stories above the entry and is trimmed with chamfered and turned columns, jig-sawn brackets and a turned balustrade. An octagonal bell-cast roof caps a turret at the northeast corner, and shingled gable ends show imbricated patterns. Three interior brick chimneys have corbeled caps. A compatibly designed studio was added at the rear. Tax records show the property was assessed on its own in 1900 and owned by J.F. Hart, proprietor of the Victoria Furniture Company. It passed to E.J. Hogan in 1904 and to J.H. Clegg in 1907. Clegg was an officer and manager of the Groce-Parrish Company and a city alderman. The house is listed for its architecture, and it remains residential.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present condition is described as good, and the present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.973283-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/82/9704/40970482/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002548.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002548/e190c850ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002548/e190c850ec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"ProfReader","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:507_N._Vine_Street.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">ProfReader</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:507_N._Vine_Street.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970482","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002428"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/clegg-john-h-house-86002548/"}
