Main in Victoria, Texas, built in 1895 of brick and stone. It was designed by Cuero architect Paul Helwig and built by McKnight Brothers of Hallettsville.","why_significant":"The building is recognized for its architecture and its role in commerce. It was built as offices for cattleman Thomas M. O'Connor and attorney David Cogswell Proctor. Its intricate Romanesque Revival detailing, in St. Louis red brick and Kerrville white sandstone, makes it a handsome example of the style.","narrative":"Located at 202 N. Main at the northern end of Victoria's central business district, northeast of De Leon Plaza, this two-story commercial building dates to 1895. Cattleman Thomas M. O'Connor and south Texas attorney David Cogswell Proctor hired Cuero architect Paul Helwig to design it as offices for the two men. The McKnight Brothers of Hallettsville built it with St. Louis red brick and white sandstone from Kerrville. Its Romanesque Revival character shows in the raised brick and stone parapet with inscription panels, a brick bartizan with carved stone base and conical peak at the southwest corner, and semicircular and cycloidal stone arches. Rusticated stone banding, brick pilasters with carved stone caps and corbeled brickwork add texture to the street facades. The primary entry sits in a recessed corner bay, with fixed display windows on the first floor and double-hung wood windows above. Recognized for architecture and commerce, it remains in good condition and in commercial use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Paul Helwig (architect), Cuero; McKnight Brothers, Hallettsville (contractor)","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and in commercial use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.082347-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/9705/40970537/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002546.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002546/ddcfa37fd2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002546/ddcfa37fd2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:O%27Connor-Proctor_Building,_Victoria,_Texas.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:O%27Connor-Proctor_Building,_Victoria,_Texas.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970537","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O%27Connor%E2%80%93Proctor_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7071725"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/oconnor-proctor-building-86002546/"}
