Tyler in Ennis, this two-story frame house with brick veneer was designed and built by local architect Hix McCanless as his own home. It reflects the Neoclassical Revival style that was popular at the time. Features include a hip roof with a hipped dormer, a three-bay flat-roofed porch with brick piers and squared wood balusters, and segmental arches over the windows. Contrasting brick forms decorative quoins, and a brick belt course and paired modillions under a deep overhanging eave add detail. A wooden shed stands on the property. McCanless was also a surveyor and served as city engineer for many years. His other surviving works include the Knights of Pythias Building, City Hall, the 1905 John Rowe Building and the Telfair House. By 1918 the house belonged to M.B. Williams, who held it through the 1930s. It was recognized as a Neoclassical Revival house designed by a local architect for himself, and its condition is described as excellent.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Hix McCanless","architectural_style":"Neoclassical Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Present condition is listed as excellent, and the present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.476552-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/52/9690/40969052/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002540.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969052","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001932"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/ellis-county/mccanless-williams-house-86002540/"}
