Liberty in Victoria, Texas, begun about 1870 and remodeled in 1904 by architect Jules Leffland for Joe T. Jecker.","why_significant":"The nomination cites architectural significance. The original c. 1870 house was believed to be the residence of Dr. James B. P. January, physician to Sam Houston's army. Its significance rests on the 1904 Leffland alterations, and the house appears much as it did when they were completed.","narrative":"This two-story wood-frame house at 104 N. Liberty in Victoria, Texas, began as a residence built around 1870 and was believed to be the home of Dr. James B. P. January, who served as physician to Sam Houston's army during the Texas war for independence. By the late nineteenth century Joe T. Jecker owned the property, and in 1904 he hired architect Jules Leffland to remodel it. The house has an L-plan, a hip roof with box eaves, weatherboard siding, and three interior brick chimneys with corbeled caps. Its west facade is five bays wide and symmetrical, with a two-tiered porch featuring a turned spindle frieze, turned posts, a balustrade and jig-sawn brackets. The center bay projects slightly and rises two stories to a gable end. The house appears much as it did after the 1904 work, which is the basis of its architectural importance. It sits at the east end of the central business district in a mostly commercial area and was recorded as vacant and in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Jules Leffland","architectural_style":"Victorian","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present condition is described as good; present use is listed as vacant.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.829218-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/9704/40970478/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002531.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002531/dcdff3b2d5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002531/dcdff3b2d5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jecker_House,_Victoria,_TX.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jecker_House,_Victoria,_TX.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970478","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._T._Jecker_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6107184"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/jecker-j-t-house-86002531/"}
