Liberty in the northeast part of downtown Victoria, Texas, this two-story brick commercial building dates to 1914. Architect Jules Leffland designed it for George H. Hauschild's cigar manufacturing business, and Eugene Tuttle served as contractor. It replaced a small frame structure, and the upper floor was originally used as living quarters, while Hauschild also operated a ranch in the Victoria area. The rectangular, flat-roofed building has a symmetrical five-bay west facade with fixed display windows on the ground floor and double-hung wood windows above. Segmental arches and a continuous brick string course mark the second-floor windows. A three-part raised parapet carries an inscription in each panel, and a denticulated brick cornice and a suspended metal canopy complete the front. It was recognized for its architecture and its connection to local commerce. It is in good condition after a recent rehabilitation and is used as offices.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Jules Leffland (architect); Eugene Tuttle (contractor)","architectural_style":"Commercial building; vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition good; recently rehabilitated; present use offices.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.661478-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/9705/40970539/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002530.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002530/c1b8ff19e3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002530/c1b8ff19e3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Hauschild_Building_Victoria_Texas.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_Hauschild_Building_Victoria_Texas.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970539","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_H._Hauschild_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5540035"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/hauschild-george-h-building-86002530/"}
