Marvin in Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas, dated to 1904 and built in a modified L-plan. The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The house is noted for its architecture. It began as a one-story modified L-plan dwelling, one of the city's most common house types. An early twentieth-century one- and two-story porch gave the facade a more balanced, symmetrical look. It was first owned by George Coleman, president of the Texas Title and Loan Co., and by 1924 was the home of grocer J. W. Cole.","narrative":"Built around 1904 at 1219 E. Marvin in Waxahachie, this one-and-a-half-story frame house began as a one-story dwelling with a modified L-plan, one of the city's most common house types. Its weatherboard siding, hip roof with gables and wood double-hung windows are typical of the form. In the early twentieth century a one- and two-story porch was added, wrapping around the south and east sides. The porch has Doric columns, a balustrade of imbricated shingles, a denticulated cornice and a two-story entry bay flanked by twin gables. Jig-sawn brackets and pedimented door and window surrounds add detail. The changes gave the facade a more balanced and symmetrical appearance than the original irregular massing. George Coleman, president of the Texas Title and Loan Co., first owned the house, and by 1924 it was the home of grocer J. W. Cole. The house remains in residential use and is in good condition. Its architecture is the basis for its listing as part of a survey of Waxahachie's historic resources.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Modified L-plan","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition and used as a residence; the inventory form also marks the relationship to site as moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.953266-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/34/9690/40969034/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002522.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002522/60facb50ce-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002522/60facb50ce-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Coleman-Cole_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Coleman-Cole_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969034","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q140166843"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/ellis-county/coleman-cole-house-86002522/"}
