It combines Long Island's traditional farm building practices with mid-Victorian picturesque details such as steep gables, cupolas and paneled doors. It also retains a high level of integrity and illustrates large-scale late nineteenth century agriculture on eastern Long Island.","narrative":"Set within a working county farm on the outskirts of Yaphank, this large wood-shingled barn was built in 1871 for the Suffolk County Almshouse. The county had bought a 170-acre farm in 1870 and hired Riverhead builder Charles Hallett to construct the almshouse, a children's home and the barn. Only the barn survives. It combines a rectangular timber frame, shingle walls and massive sliding doors, typical of Long Island farm building, with twin steep gables, two louvered cupolas, broad overhanging eaves and paneled doors drawn from Victorian picturesque taste. Its design echoed the vanished almshouse. Farming at such institutions helped pay for the care of residents and gave them work. Today the barn is used for hay storage and still has animal stalls, and its sawn timber frame remains largely intact. It is valued as a local landmark, as the last reminder of the almshouse, and as evidence of large-scale late nineteenth century agriculture on eastern Long Island.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date 1871)","architect_builder":"Charles Hallett (builder)","architectural_style":"Long Island vernacular farm building with mid-Victorian picturesque detailing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in good condition; used for hay storage with animal stalls on part of the first floor, within a modern county cooperative extension farm.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.056042-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/86002512.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002512/df1f55eef2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002512/df1f55eef2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Team jib","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Suffolk_County_Almshouse_Barn.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Team jib</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Suffolk_County_Almshouse_Barn.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322276","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suffolk_County_Almshouse_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7634546"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/suffolk-county-almshouse-barn-86002512/"}
