Most of these houses were razed for a public-housing complex. Of the seven that survive, this is described as the best and least altered. The reviewer called it a rare survivor of locally important mill workers' housing with a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"This small frame house at 816 West Water in Waxahachie dates to about 1900. It has a two-room plan, drop siding, a gable roof with composition shingles and box eaves, and wood double-hung windows with one-over-one lights. Two single-door entrances open onto a three-bay porch with a shed roof and turned wood posts across the south side. Its massing and plan are typical of late nineteenth-century vernacular houses. The house was listed because of its link to the Waxahachie Textile Mill. When the mill began operating in the early twentieth century, company officials built many simple dwellings for workers, and at one time the mill was almost completely surrounded by this housing. Most of those houses were later razed when a low-income public-housing complex was built on the site. Seven of the old workers' houses survive, and this one is regarded as the best and the least altered. It was recognized for both its architecture and its connection to local industry.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular; massing and plan typical of late 19th century vernacular houses","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Present condition is listed as fair; present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.545554-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/20/9691/40969120/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002480.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002480/b0873550ae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002480/b0873550ae-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_816_West_Water_Waxahachie_Wiki_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_816_West_Water_Waxahachie_Wiki_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969120","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002010"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/ellis-county/house-at-816-west-water-86002480/"}
