Rogers Street, part of N. Monroe Street and parts of W. Marvin Street, just north of the central business district. It holds 28 buildings, mostly dwellings from the 1880s to the 1920s.","why_significant":"The district is described as one of the city's best and most intact collections of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century residences. It survives close to downtown in an area that once consisted almost entirely of similar dwellings. Its L-plan and T-plan houses, bungalows and a Prairie-style house show the eclecticism of the period. Of the 28 buildings, 25 are contributing.","narrative":"Just north of downtown Waxahachie, this 14-acre district covers the 500 and 600 blocks of North Rogers Street along with a block of North Monroe and parts of West Marvin Street. It contains 28 buildings, almost all of them houses built between about 1885 and 1925. Most are one-story frame dwellings with L-shaped or modified L-shaped plans, and two are the locally rare T-plan type. The west side of the 600 block has larger houses built by merchants and businessmen, including the S. W. Durham House, which combines a Mission parapet with bungalow porch details, and the Prairie-style J. F. Wyatt House. Surrounding areas have been taken over by commercial and later development, so these blocks remain a small, intact pocket of historic homes. Twenty-five buildings contribute to the district's character; three do not, including a 1970 apartment building. Several owners have rehabilitated their houses, and the Durham House now serves as a restaurant.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899; 1900-1935","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular dwellings (L-plan, T-plan) with bungalow, Prairie School, Queen Anne and Mission influences","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition is stated as good.
