Seven are shotgun-plan dwellings, and the builder is unknown.","why_significant":"The row is a surviving example of lower-class Black housing from the early twentieth century in an area long served as Waxahachie's Black community. Its houses are nearly identical in plan, form and siting, and most remain largely unaltered. Similar dwellings once common in town have been moved, razed or remodeled, which adds to the group's importance.","narrative":"Eight modest frame houses line the east side of the 300 block of Wyatt Street in Waxahachie, forming a district built about 1918. Seven follow the shotgun plan, a narrow house one room wide and two rooms deep, with a low hipped roof and a single-bay inset front porch. The eighth, at 308 Wyatt, is a two-room house with a gable roof that matches its neighbors in scale and materials. Shed additions have been added at the rear of some, but most of the houses have changed little since construction. The street lies in an area that has historically been Waxahachie's Black community, and the houses were built for poor Black laborers. The row is valued as a rare, cohesive reminder of lower-class Black housing in the early twentieth century, when many similar dwellings elsewhere in town were moved, demolished or remodeled beyond recognition. The shotgun form itself has roots traced to Africa and the Caribbean and was common across the South into the 1930s.","period_of_significance":"1900-1935","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Shotgun house (vernacular)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Occupied private residences in fair condition, with minor alterations such as rear shed additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.856069-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/18/9691/40969118/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002463.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002463/10b4f23b5a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002463/10b4f23b5a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WyattStreetHistoricDistrict_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WyattStreetHistoricDistrict_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969118","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q109999693"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/ellis-county/wyatt-street-shotgun-house-historic-district-86002463/"}
