Church in Victoria, Texas, Old Nazareth Academy is a raised two-and-a-half-story school of structural brick with stucco trim and a wood-frame gable roof. Built on a U plan, it was designed by Victoria architect Jules Leffland and constructed by Guithier & Mitchell. Its decoration is elaborate: curvilinear gable and dormer parapets accentuated by stuccoed coursing, stuccoed quoins at the corners, and a centered entry in a projecting bay topped by a three-tier octagonal lantern. A one-story porch with a balcony rests on piers. The building is recorded as Leffland's most unusual and creative work, blending Spanish and Mission revival influences and possibly references to Flemish guild halls. It also added needed classroom space for the Convent School, which began in 1867. Frame buildings stand on the south side of the block, and the property remains in good condition, serving as a school and day care.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect Jules Leffland; contractor Guithier & Mitchell","architectural_style":"Rococo revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in good condition; present use is school and day care.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.741081-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/9705/40970553/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002462.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002462/e66bbbec79-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002462/e66bbbec79-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nazareth_Academy_Victoria_Texas.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nazareth_Academy_Victoria_Texas.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970553","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Nazareth_Academy","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7084601"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/old-nazareth-academy-86002462/"}
