Main in Ennis, Ellis County, Texas, dated to 1885. The architect or builder is unknown, and the house has been moved from its original site.","why_significant":"The inventory form calls it the finest local example of an I-house, a type found in limited numbers in Texas. Its centered decorated gable flanked by dormers and a second-story balcony departs from local building traditions, though similar forms occur elsewhere in the region. It was also the home of T. B. Farrar, a prominent farmer and cattleman.","narrative":"Built around 1885 at 601 S. Main in Ennis, this two-story frame dwelling is a center-hall I-house, one room deep. It has weatherboard siding, a gable roof with composition shingles, double-hung wood windows with four-over-four lights, and exterior brick chimneys. A one-bay porch with square wood posts marks the entry. The steep roof, dormers and gable show Gothic influence. The center bay is emphasized by the porch, a gable and jig-sawn bargeboard, and the dormer glazing has moldings and imbricated shingles. Corner pilasters complete the exterior. The house has been moved and now sits in a mostly residential area south of the central business district. It was recorded as the finest local example of an I-house, a type uncommon in Texas. T. B. Farrar, a prominent farmer and cattleman who came to Ellis County in 1880, lived here, and his family kept the property into the 1930s. The house remains residential and is in fair condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"I-house","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present condition is listed as fair, and the present use is residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.243142-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/9689/40968968/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002454.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968968","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001948"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/ellis-county/farrar-house-86002454/"}
