The diocese first engaged Galveston architect Nicholas Clayton in the mid-1890s, and San Antonio architects later redesigned the church. It is the primary church of the Victoria Diocese and served worshippers of many ethnic origins, including Mexican, Irish, German, Italian and French.","narrative":"St. Mary's Catholic Church at 101 W. Church in Victoria, Texas, is a Gothic Revival building of random-laid limestone ashlar with smooth stone trim. Its cruciform plan, twin towers with steeply pitched spires, buttress-like elements, lancet-arched windows and doors, quatrefoils and stained glass give it a distinctly medieval character. The diocese first hired Galveston architect Nicholas Clayton in the mid-1890s, but after the first contractor defaulted, San Antonio architects Phelps & King redesigned the church. Victoria contractor Bailey Mills, with Fred Urban as supervisor, built it in 1903-04. Italian laborers who had worked on the state capitol and later the county courthouse volunteered labor to haul and cut the limestone. The church is the primary church of the Victoria Diocese and home church to the Order of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament Sisters. Its congregation has included people of Mexican, Irish, German, Italian and French origin. The building remains in good condition and in religious use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Phelps & King, San Antonio (architects); contractor Bailey Mills with Fred Urban","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present condition is good and the building remains in religious use; the interior altar and other details were replaced with post-Vatican II elements.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.027325-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/66/9705/40970566/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002450.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002450/b4fd656582-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002450/b4fd656582-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Billy Hathorn at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Catholic_Church,_Victoria,_TX_IMG_1012.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Billy Hathorn at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Catholic_Church,_Victoria,_TX_IMG_1012.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970566","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Mary%27s_Catholic_Church_(Victoria,_Texas)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7401810"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/saint-marys-catholic-church-86002450/"}
