Although the L-plan is among the most common types in Waxahachie, this house shows late Victorian details alongside a curved Ionic-columned porch.","narrative":"This one-story frame house at 523 Highland sits in a residential neighborhood west of Waxahachie's central business district, in the University addition south of the old Trinity University campus. Dated to 1902, it is a modified L-plan dwelling clad in weatherboard, with a hip roof broken by gables, wood double-hung windows, and an interior brick chimney with a corbeled cap. A five-bay porch with Ionic columns wraps around the south and east sides, and a secondary entry lies at the rear of the porch. The house was recorded as an architectural example. The L-plan is one of the most common house types in the city, but this one is described as among the finest and best preserved. Its steeply pitched roof with intersecting gables, imbricated shingles in the gable ends, sunburst motif, jig-sawn corner brackets and entry details reflect late Victorian Queen Anne style, while the curved Ionic porch reflects Neoclassical Revival. The house was in good condition and used as a residence when surveyed in 1985.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Modified L-plan with Queen Anne and Neoclassical Revival elements","criteria":[],"status_note":"Condition listed as good; present use residential.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.519405-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/9690/40969014/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002416.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002416/c1e431ba9b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002416/c1e431ba9b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:523Highland1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:523Highland1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969014","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000592"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/ellis-county/house-at-523-highland-86002416/"}
