Campbell in Stamford, Jones County, Texas, built between 1908 and 1913 (probably 1908-1910) by J.P. Astin.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the most significant structures in Stamford and an outstanding example of Neo-Classical Revival style applied to a very large house, a style rare in the city. It is also one of the best preserved early twentieth-century dwellings in town. Its builder and first occupant, J.P. Astin, was an early Stamford pioneer and civic leader.","narrative":"This large two-story house at 111 E. Campbell in Stamford was built between 1908 and 1913, probably in 1908-1910, by J.P. Astin. Astin arrived in Stamford in 1908 as a real estate agent, speculator and developer and built the residence after about ten years in the city. The wood-frame house follows the Neo-Classical Revival style. It has a hipped roof with a widow's walk, large square dormers with lozenge windows, modillions and dentils under the eaves, and a flat-roofed entry portico carried on paired fluted Ionic columns. One-story porches with slender Ionic columns flank the house, and a porte cochere extends from the west porch. A stable and servants quarters sit at the rear of the grounds, and a low iron fence surrounds the quarter-block. The nomination describes the house as one of Stamford's largest and best preserved early twentieth-century homes, and notes that a sympathetic restoration in 1983-84 respected its original character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"J.P.
