Swenson in Stamford, Jones County, Texas, built around 1905 (between 1900 and 1908) in a simplified Queen Anne style. The builder is not named.","why_significant":"The house is a good example of the small frame dwellings built in Stamford's early years and one of the few surviving simplified Queen Anne houses in the city. It is described as virtually original in every detail and as the only small, unaltered, non-deteriorated example of its type in town. It is judged significant at the local level for architecture.","narrative":"This small frame house at 501 N. Swenson in Stamford, Texas, was built around 1905, probably between 1904 and 1906. It has a hipped, wood-shingled central section with two projecting gables forming an L-shaped plan, plus a small shed addition at the rear and an asymmetrical corner porch. Queen Anne character comes from the gable ends, which have full shingled returns, wide bargeboards, decorative shingle siding and a sunburst-patterned panel in each gable. The porch has turned columns, a spindle frieze and decorative brackets. The house is listed for its architecture at the local level. By the time it was built, the simplified Queen Anne style was losing popularity and few small examples were going up in Stamford, so the house was unusual even then. It has survived about eight decades with little or no alteration and is the only small, unaltered, non-deteriorated example of the style in the city. It sits in a mixed residential and commercial area on U.S. Highway 277.","period_of_significance":"c. 1905","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Simplified Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as unaltered and in good condition, located in a mixed residential/commercial area on U.S. Highway 277.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.718521-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/9697/40969746/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002374.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002374/c0e09eb716-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002374/c0e09eb716-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:501_North_Swenson1_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:501_North_Swenson1_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969746","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107330010"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/jones-county/house-at-501-north-swenson-86002374/"}
