Rotan in Stamford, Jones County, Texas, built about 1916-1917 for the H.O. Wooten Grocery Company and later known as the A.C. Humphrey Warehouse.","why_significant":"It is a reminder of the wholesale grocery trade that flourished in Stamford before World War I. The nomination calls it the best surviving, and last and largest remaining, example of high-quality commercial masonry in the city. It is also the best preserved and best built of Stamford's surviving warehouses.","narrative":"Near the railroad tracks south of Stamford's town square, a large brick warehouse at 128 E. Rotan recalls the city's days as a wholesale grocery center. The H.O. Wooten Grocery Company bought the lots in 1916 to expand its operations and soon built the structure, probably in 1916 or 1917. Solid brick walls are divided into bays by piers, with corbeled cornices, string courses and sill courses. Small arched windows light the high interior, while larger one-over-one wood windows with relieving arches serve three sides. A wooden loading dock with a flat awning, sliding braced doors and an office entrance occupy the remaining side. Although it was essentially a warehouse, the company paid for skilled craftsmen and quality materials. Many comparable Stamford buildings have been lost or stuccoed over, hiding their brickwork. This one survives as the largest remaining example of fine commercial masonry in the city and its best preserved warehouse, which supported its listing for architecture at the local level.","period_of_significance":"c. 1917","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as altered but in good condition; located near the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad tracks in a commercial/industrial area south of the town square.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.850944-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/9697/40969722/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002363.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969722","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001245"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/jones-county/old-wooten-h-o-grocery-86002363/"}
