Noble Allan Birge and attributed to architect John Tulloch.","why_significant":"The house is an unusual, flamboyant example of transitional Queen Anne/Colonial Revival architecture, of which few examples survive in Sherman. It is also tied to Capt. Birge, an early industrial developer who founded a large cotton brokerage firm, a compress company and cotton oil mills.","narrative":"Capt. Noble Allan Birge built this large wood-frame house in Sherman, Texas, in 1896, after the Great Sherman Tornado destroyed his earlier home on the same site. The two-and-one-half story dwelling combines a Queen Anne form, with a pyramidal roof and pedimented bays, and Colonial Revival touches such as a two-story portico with oversized columns and Scamozzi capitals. Inside, many original chandeliers, mantels, moldings, heart-of-pine floors and early electrical sconces remain. Architect John Tulloch was probably responsible for the design. Birge, who came to Sherman in 1874, founded a major cotton brokerage firm and other cotton-related businesses, and eight of his thirteen children built homes nearby. The house is the oldest and largest in its neighborhood and one of only eight or nine similarly styled houses surviving in Sherman. A recent restoration removed most later modifications, though a 1955-56 breakfast room and a 1984 water closet remain at the rear.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"John Tulloch (attributed)","architectural_style":"Transitional Queen Anne/Colonial Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; recently restored, with most 1940s and 1950s additions removed and the condition rated excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.251664-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/75/9721/40972175/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86002187.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002187/70acf1c98d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002187/70acf1c98d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Michael Barera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sherman_July_2016_57_(Captain_N._A._Birge_House).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Barera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sherman_July_2016_57_(Captain_N._A._Birge_House).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972175","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107321862"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/grayson-county/birge-capt-noble-allan-house-86002187/"}
