When built it was the largest and one of the most prestigious Baptist churches there, and it remains among the most architecturally prominent Baptist buildings from 1861-1925. It also served the neighborhood for decades as a church and then a community center.","narrative":"Prospect Hill Baptist Church, at 1601 Buena Vista in San Antonio, is a monumentally proportioned two-story church of buff-colored brick completed in 1911. Henry J. Harker of Little Rock, Arkansas, produced the Beaux Arts design, and San Antonio contractor Arthur A. Evins built it, probably altering the exterior detailing and changing the materials from stone to brick to cut costs. The congregation was organized in 1891 and grew under pastor T. V. Neal. When finished, the church was the largest and one of the most prestigious Baptist churches in the city. It served Baptists until the 1960s, then became a community center housing a clinic, kindergarten and drug rehabilitation program. Fires in 1973 and 1980 destroyed the interior and the dome. The exterior was restored, the interior was converted to apartments for low-income elderly residents, and the dome was rebuilt. The city designated it a historic landmark in 1978. It remains one of San Antonio's most prominent surviving Baptist buildings from 1861-1925.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific date 1911)","architect_builder":"Henry J.
