It retains eighteenth-century interior features along with Federal and Greek Revival alterations. It also recalls the community's early agricultural settlement and the Edward Salyer family.","narrative":"Set on a half-acre lot in Pearl River, Rockland County, this wood-frame farmhouse is believed to have been built about 1765 and is thought to be the oldest surviving building in the hamlet. It follows the Dutch building tradition of the lower Hudson Valley, with a five-bay center-hall facade, a sweeping gambrel roof with broad overhangs, and brick and stone end chimneys. The frame is made of hand-hewn, adzed beams joined with pegs, resting on a thick fieldstone foundation. Wood construction of this age is uncommon in the region, where most survivors are sandstone. Inside, the former basement kitchen preserves a jambless fireplace and the outline of a beehive oven, along with wide floorboards and exposed framing. Later owners added Federal mantels around 1800 and a Greek Revival entrance around 1840. A stone-lined well from the early period also survives. The house recalls the farming settlement of the Kakiat Patent area and the Salyer family, early residents of Pearl River.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1765 - ca. 1840","architect_builder":"Edward Salyer","architectural_style":"Dutch vernacular building tradition (with Federal and Greek Revival alterations)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in excellent condition, altered, on its original site; includes a modern frame wing and a ca. 1980 wellhouse.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.698678-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/86002178.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002178/89c54dd4b6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002178/89c54dd4b6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_Salyer_House,_Pearl_River,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edward_Salyer_House,_Pearl_River,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321496","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Salyer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5345207"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rockland-county/salyer-edward-house-86002178/"}
