It contains club-era cottages and a clubhouse built as part of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, with a few later intrusions.","why_significant":"The district is significant as the exclusive recreational retreat of Pittsburgh's business elite, established in 1879 and in use only until the 1889 Johnstown Flood. Its surviving Victorian cottages, including Queen Anne, Stick Style and Eastlake examples, are argued to be locally outstanding architecture. The nomination also links the club to the shift of Pittsburgh's elite toward urban cultural life in the 1890s.","narrative":"Along the north shore of what was once a three-mile artificial lake near Saint Michael in Adams Township, a linear district of club-era buildings survives from the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club. The club was incorporated in 1879 by Pittsburgh businessmen seeking private fishing, boating and hunting outside the city, and it admitted only members and their families. Most of the wooden, clapboard-sided cottages and the clubhouse were built around 1883 in Queen Anne, Stick Style and Eastlake forms, with open front porches and bays facing the water. The clubhouse, which once had forty-seven bedrooms and a dining hall seating 150, remains the district's focal point despite the loss of its eastern wing. The club ended with the collapse of the South Fork Dam in May 1889, which caused the Johnstown Flood; the buildings were undamaged, but members never returned. Structure 105 is regarded as the best Queen Anne house in Adams Township and neighbouring townships.","period_of_significance":"1879-1889","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne, Stick Style, Gothic, Eastlake, Victorian sub-types","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Clubhouse is used as a combined hotel/tavern; cottages are residential; several cottages have been altered and three non-club structures are intrusions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:32.831292-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/86002091.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002091/d6dbb83a4e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86002091/d6dbb83a4e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Niagara","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Fork_Fishing_and_Hunting_Clubhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Niagara</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Fork_Fishing_and_Hunting_Clubhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71998258","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q95236929"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/cambria-county/south-fork-fishing-and-hunting-club-historic-district-86002091/"}
