Its builder and architect are not known.","why_significant":"The nomination presents it as the most intact of the few remaining early commercial buildings in Roanoke, a cattle-shipping town. It is nominated in architecture and commerce because it served as the economic center of a ranching community. Its interior fittings, including pressed-tin ceilings, the vault door frontispiece and the cabinetry, are described as a rare and unusually intact survival for the region.","narrative":"Built in 1906 of light-tan brick, this small bank at 312 Oak Street in Roanoke, Texas, is the most intact surviving early commercial building in the town. It has a flat roof, a corbeled brick parapet, false chimneys at the corners, and an angled recessed corner entry beneath a slender iron column. Inside, the original pressed-metal ceiling, a massive vault with a classically detailed broken-pediment door, and wooden and wrought-iron teller partitions remain. Roanoke was platted in 1881 by the Texas & Pacific Railroad and became a shipping point for large cattle ranches. For some twenty years ranchers handled cash deals without a local bank, sending couriers to Fort Worth or Denton. The Continental State Bank opened in 1906 and offered a safer place for deposits and business, also serving more than twenty local retailers. In 1936 the building passed to a local businessman who ran a credit union there until 1959. Recent restoration stabilized the exterior and preserved the interior details.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific date 1906)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular early twentieth-century commercial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as being in excellent condition and unaltered, with a recent restoration that stabilized the exterior and kept the interior details; the classification lists it as unoccupied and vacant.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.564233-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/9717/40971799/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/86001939.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001939/d95b48a1ff-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001939/d95b48a1ff-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Contnental_State_Bank1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Contnental_State_Bank1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971799","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001908"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/denton-county/old-continental-state-bank-86001939/"}
