It is also associated with the prominent local Wheat family, notably Dr. Samuel Wheat, who served as selectman. The form says it meets criteria B and C.","narrative":"Built around 1735 at 399 Waltham Street in West Newton, this narrow, gambrel-roofed house is among the oldest surviving dwellings in Newton. It is clapboarded and Georgian in style, and it sits on a large lot of just over an acre close to a busy street. Later changes include six-over-six window sash added in the early 19th century, along with dormers and an elaborate classical doorway, yet the steep roof, tall narrow profile and small dimensions still show what a substantial early 18th-century home looked like. Two-story gambrel-roofed houses from that era are rare in Newton. The house was evidently built for Dr. Samuel Wheat (1703-1770), a physician's son who arrived in Newton as a boy, served on committees including one choosing the site of a new meeting house, and was selectman in 1753. After his death the property passed to his daughter Catherine and her husband, Capt. Thomas Eustis. Its age, intact character and links to a prominent local family support its listing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; condition described as good, with no outbuildings and no major alterations listed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.673995-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/7914/63791417/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001895.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001895/a417963d20-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001895/a417963d20-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_SamuelWheatHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_SamuelWheatHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791417","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Wheat_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7412918"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/wheat-samuel-house-86001895/"}
