Stone. The architect is unknown, and the complex is now two separate residences.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house and carriage barn are a well-preserved and elaborately detailed example of Queen Anne architecture, meeting criterion C. It also notes the original owner was a well-known Boston banker and broker.","narrative":"Built in 1881 on Temple Street in West Newton, this house and its carriage barn were originally one estate for Joseph L. Stone. Stone bought the land in October 1880 from Charlotte Davison, who was subdividing the area. He was a lifelong Boston businessman and banker who ran a banking and Custom House brokerage business with Cutler Downer. After his death in 1889, the property passed to Stephen W. Reynolds, president of the Mexican Central Railroad, who left for Boston around 1898. The front-gabled house has a brick first story, patterned shingles, scroll-sawn woodwork on the porch and side porte-cochere, and applied wooden panels recalling Tudor-era English buildings. An unusual second-level balcony sits in a recessed central area beneath a jerkin head gable. The clapboard carriage barn repeats the recessed and projecting forms of the house. Both buildings are well preserved and now serve as separate residences, which supports their recognition as an elaborately detailed Queen Anne ensemble.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good; the property is used as two residences, with no major alterations recorded.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.627102-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/7911/63791158/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001889.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001889/e7841a39ed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001889/e7841a39ed-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_L_Stone_House,_West_Newton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_L_Stone_House,_West_Newton_MA.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"86001760","name":"Putnam Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/putnam-street-historic-district-86001760/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791158","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_L._Stone_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6284754"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/stone-joseph-l-house-86001889/"}
