The architect is unknown. A carriage house stands on the property.","why_significant":"The nomination calls the house an outstanding example of the Queen Anne manner in its middle phase, meeting Criterion C. It also illustrates the prosperous Boston merchants and manufacturers who commuted from Newton Corner in the late nineteenth century. It was built on land that was once part of the Brackett estate.","narrative":"Built around 1883 at 43 Fairmont Avenue in Newton Corner, this house is a full expression of the Queen Anne style in its middle phase. Beneath its complicated look is a rectangular block under a hip roof, expanded by gables of varying size on every elevation. Cut wood shingles are laid in many patterns. The focal point is a round corner tower with a conical roof and copper ball finial, decorated with a foliated mastic panel. A tall brick chimney and several first- and second-story porches with bulbous turned posts add to the effect. The carriage house has an ogival turret. John Souther, an early occupant, sold machinery in Boston and typified the merchants and manufacturers who commuted from Newton Corner in the late nineteenth century. The lot was once part of the Brackett estate, which in 1875 extended on both sides of Fairmont Avenue. The house was listed for its architectural quality. It remains a dwelling in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is dwelling; condition is listed as excellent, with a window on the east elevation as the only major alteration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.745217-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/7911/63791156/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001883.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001883/8ff93467bc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001883/8ff93467bc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Souther_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Souther_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791156","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Souther_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715644"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/souther-john-house-86001883/"}
