Salisbury.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance under Criterion C because the original 1847 building contract between Fuller and Salisbury survives. Few building records exist for Newton structures built before 1912, so the contract sheds light on mid-nineteenth-century building practices. The house is also described as an excellent example of Greek Revival architecture.","narrative":"Built in 1847 at 85 Langley Road in Newton Centre, this 2½-story Greek Revival house was constructed by Henry Fuller of Newton for Jonas G. Salisbury, a yeoman with considerable real estate holdings. The surviving building contract set the price at $2,630 and called for plans drawn by Fuller. That document is the main reason the house matters, since few building records exist for Newton structures predating 1912. The clapboard house has a flanking-gable roof, panelled corner pilasters carrying a broad entablature, a full-width Doric porch, a transomed and sidelighted entrance, full-length first-story windows, and a wooden garland ornament in the gable. Fuller owned a builder's guide, Abraham Swan's The British Architect, which may have inspired the detailing. Salisbury sold the property in 1853 to a shopkeeper for $4,000. The house stands on Langley Road, a town way laid out in 1809 and renamed in 1895. It remains a dwelling in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Henry Fuller of Newton","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and in use as a dwelling, with a rear ell added and the front porch and door surround possibly altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:00.928877-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/4/7909/63790904/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001876.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001876/513652964a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001876/513652964a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_JonasSalisburyHouse_LangleyRoad.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewtonMA_JonasSalisburyHouse_LangleyRoad.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790904","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonas_Salisbury_House_(85_Langley_Road)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715647"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/salisbury-jonas-house-86001876/"}
