The architect is unknown, and it is still used as a dwelling.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a well-preserved example of Italianate design in Newton Centre, with a later Colonial Revival re-trimming from the 1890s. It is also associated with Roswell Turner and Charles S. Davis, both important figures in the nineteenth-century development of the area.","narrative":"Mount Pleasant is a 2 1/2-story clapboard house at 15 Bracebridge Road in Newton Centre, built around 1856 in the Italianate style by an unknown architect. It has a low-pitched slate gable roof, a three-bay facade with a center gable and shallow entrance pavilion, a hip-roofed tower and bracketed window lintels. In the 1890s the house was re-trimmed with Colonial Revival details, including applied pilasters on the center pavilion and a portico on the south side. Its openwork entrance porch enframement is unusual and also appears on another Newton house. The property is tied to the area's development. Roswell Turner began acquiring land west of Centre Street in the 1840s, and Charles S. Davis, an associate of the Boston piano firm Hallett & Davis, acquired many Turner properties in the 1860s, including this house. Davis remained active in Newton Centre's growth until his death in 1907. The house is in very good condition and remains a dwelling on a suburban lot beside the Cochituate Aqueduct.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate, with c.1890s Colonial Revival decorative motifs","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Present use is a dwelling; condition is described as very good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:02.00799-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7922/63792250/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001851.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001851/e3a3580b6f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001851/e3a3580b6f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Pleasant,_Newton_Centre_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Pleasant,_Newton_Centre_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63792250","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Pleasant_(Newton,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6922876"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/mount-pleasant-86001851/"}
