The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of the area's most highly developed examples of the Colonial Revival style, with both the main house and carriage house showing a textbook vocabulary of Colonial Revival ornament. It also represents the upper-middle class, architect-designed houses that once lined Beacon Street west from Newton Centre.","narrative":"Built in 1893 at 945 Beacon Street in Newton Centre, this Colonial Revival house was erected for Andrew and Anne Kistler. Andrew Kistler was a leather dealer with a Boston business address. The two-and-a-half-story rectangular house has a truncated hip roof and a two-sided verandah with slender turned balusters. Its five-bay facade has a center entrance with leaded glass sidelights beneath a flat-roofed porch on clustered Doric columns, and a Palladian window aligned above. The wide cornice carries egg-and-dart moulding, dentils and a frieze with swags. A carriage house on the property shares the same Colonial Revival detail. The land was once part of a large tract owned by developer Charles Davis, in a village that grew after Beacon Street was extended westward in 1852. The house was listed for its architecture, as an especially developed local example of the style and a surviving example of the upper-middle-class houses that once lined Beacon Street. It remains a dwelling in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and exceptionally well preserved; in present use as a dwelling. The carriage house was remodelled in 1986.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:01.936369-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/7906/63790653/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/86001849.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001849/6d46e28a9b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/86001849/6d46e28a9b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kistler_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley from Boston, MA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kistler_House,_Newton,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"86001735","name":"Crystal Lake and Pleasant Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/crystal-lake-and-pleasant-street-historic-district-86001735/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790653","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kistler_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6417324"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/kistler-house-86001849/"}
